What the Affordable Care Act guarantees

ACA plans are the individual and family health plans sold under the Affordable Care Act. Every insurer selling them in Utah plays by the same federal rules, which is what makes them easy to compare: the differences are price, network, and how costs are split between you and the plan, not whether the basics are covered.

An ACA plan cannot turn you down or charge you more because of your health. Your premium can vary only by your age, where you live, tobacco use, and how many people are on the plan. And if your household income falls in the right range, a premium tax credit lowers the monthly bill, paid straight to the insurer so you see the lower price from the first month.

The protections built into every ACA plan

Whichever Utah carrier and metal level you choose, these come standard.

Pre-existing conditions covered

Diabetes, a pregnancy, a cancer history: none of it can be used to deny you or raise your rate.

Essential health benefits

Doctor visits, emergency care, hospital stays, maternity, mental health, prescriptions, and lab work are covered on every plan.

Preventive care at no cost

Annual checkups, recommended screenings, and most vaccines cost nothing when you use an in-network provider.

A ceiling on your costs

Every plan has a yearly out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach it, the plan pays for covered in-network care for the rest of the year.

What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ACA insurance the same as Obamacare?+

Yes. "Obamacare" is the everyday name for the Affordable Care Act, and ACA plans sold through the Health Insurance Marketplace are what most people mean by it. Same plans, same rules, same prices.

What do Bronze, Silver, and Gold mean?+

The metal levels describe how you and the plan split costs, not the quality of care. Bronze has the lowest premium and the highest costs when you use care. Gold has a higher premium and lower deductibles and copays. Silver sits in between, and it is the only level with extra cost-sharing reductions that lower your deductible if your income qualifies.

Who can buy an ACA plan in Utah?+

Most Utah residents under 65 who are not on Medicare can buy one. Whether you also get a tax credit depends on your household income, your household size, and whether an employer offers you affordable coverage.

Can I buy an ACA plan any time of year?+

Only during Open Enrollment, or within a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby. Outside those windows, ACA plans are not available, even directly from a carrier.

Does it cost more to buy an ACA plan through an agent?+

No. ACA premiums are filed with regulators and are identical whether you enroll on HealthCare.gov, directly with a carrier, or through us. Agents are paid by the carrier, so our help is free.
