Medicare Enrollment Periods Explained: When Can You Sign Up in Utah?

5 min read

Medicare has more enrollment windows than most people expect, and picking the wrong one — or missing one entirely — can mean penalties or gaps in coverage. Here's a breakdown.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window centered on your 65th birthday (3 months before, your birthday month, and 3 months after). This is typically when you should first enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 through December 7 every year. During this window, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or change your Part D prescription drug plan, with changes taking effect January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 through March 31. If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this window lets you make one additional switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available outside the standard windows if you experience a qualifying life event — moving out of your plan's service area, losing employer coverage, or a handful of other circumstances.

Not sure which window applies to you? A quick call with a licensed Utah Medicare specialist can clarify your options and avoid costly mistakes.
